Infrastructure for agro-industrial hubs

SAPZ infrastructure becomes climate-resilient, cost-effective, and sustainable

Agricultural Infrastructure Development

Provides support for the development of enabling climate-adapted infrastructure for agro-industrial hubs

Africa Agric Innovation Hubs
100% Organic Produce

The FCT SAPZ initiative is designed to promote sustainable agro-industrialization by creating resilient and future-proof infrastructure that addresses the challenges of climate change while boosting agricultural productivity and value addition. Support in this area covers the following dimensions:

  1. Climate-Smart Infrastructure Development

    • Construction and rehabilitation of roads, storage facilities, and processing plants using eco-friendly, energy-efficient, and durable materials.

    • Integration of renewable energy sources such as solar and bioenergy to power agro-industrial hubs, ensuring energy security and reducing carbon footprints.

  2. Water and Irrigation Systems

    • Establishment of modern irrigation systems that optimize water usage and prevent wastage, ensuring year-round agricultural productivity.

    • Development of water harvesting, storage, and distribution systems that support both crop and livestock value chains, especially in climate-stressed areas.

  3. Resilient Logistics and Transport Networks

    • Building climate-resilient access roads and transport corridors to link farms, processing centers, and markets.

    • Designing logistics systems that remain operational during floods, extreme weather, or other climate-related disruptions.

  4. Waste Management and Circular Economy

    • Promotion of waste-to-energy initiatives where agro-industrial by-products are recycled for energy generation or organic fertilizer production.

    • Adoption of circular economy practices to reduce post-harvest losses and ensure sustainable resource utilization.

  5. Smart Technology Integration

    • Deployment of ICT-enabled systems for monitoring weather, soil, and crop conditions, guiding farmers and processors in real time.

    • Leveraging climate data analytics for infrastructure planning, reducing risks, and increasing adaptive capacity of agro-industrial hubs.

  6. Capacity Building and Policy Support

    • Training stakeholders on climate-smart practices in infrastructure planning and maintenance.

    • Establishing policies, standards, and guidelines that ensure all SAPZ infrastructure projects meet climate adaptation and sustainability benchmarks.
